Wheat Farming in Montana

Sunday night, the 20th, we were very fortunate that our friends, dEE and Kerry, invited us to stay at their house. They live on a wheat farm outside Yellowstone. So, we went from the Dairy Farm in Canada to a Wheat Farm in Montana! First thing, Teresa and Alan said, "Can we play outside?!?" They have a HUGE front yard! Alan immediatly found the wagon under the porch and Teresa collected pinecones. The adults sat on the front porch and talked.


After a little while, Kerry needed to go out and irrigate the fields. Teresa, Alan and Jim went along. They rode 4 wheelers out to the pipes and watched Kerry move the little doors that open or close, depending on if that particular field needs water. The wheat is very close to harvest...about the middle of August. A couple of the fields don't need water any more, in fact. They are just ripening for harvest. The kids had a BLAST on the 4 wheelers! They came back and said, "We got to drive!" (with the grown-ups on the vehicles with them, of course, Nana!)


Unlike the other farm, dEE and Kerry only have one animal: a pet horse. It belongs to one of their daughters-in-law. The horse is 35 years old! She has a path between the house and the fields that is hers to eat as much as she likes. Teresa wanted to help brush the horse because she had tangles in her hair. Teresa has been battling tangles this trip. Conditioning Shampoo must have been invented by men...and men must have been behind the decission to put it in hotel rooms to cut costs! No one with long hair would EVER make that choice! We had to buy our own Shampoo and Conditioner after a few days because her hair was SO tangled...Teresa's...not the horse...

Back to the story...

dEE and Kerry's house is nicely placed and they have a beautiful view out their kitchen window. The wheat fields are in the foreground. Trains periofically go buy delivering coal or wheat to different ports. Just past the train tracks is a river. We were watching boats go by as well. Then, farther on are beautiful moutains. It is hazy because of local forest fires, but there are snow covered moutians beyond the rolling hills in the picture. It was a beautiful view!

dEE and Kerry were wonderful hosts! We had steak and grilled vegi's for dinner. The kids dragged out all the John Deere tractors that belonged to their boys and had them set up all over the downstairs rec room.
